The legal requirement is 1.6mm and so anything close to this would require immediate action for your safety and that of other road users. A simple method by which you can check this for yourself is to use a 20p coin. Simply place the coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.
